A distressing video has surfaced, revealing a group of individuals in North Carolina recklessly extracting bear cubs from a tree merely to capture selfies. The footage captured the group, consisting of about six people, forcibly removing three terrified black bear cubs from a tree located over a fence at a Buncombe County apartment complex.
In the midst of this chaos, some members of the group were observed posing with the cubs, with one individual carelessly dropping a cub while holding it. Another cub was seen desperately attempting to escape the clutches of the group, seeking refuge by trying to scale the fence. The incident prompted authorities to intervene, with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission enlisting the support of special projects biologist Ashley Hobbs. Hobbs, upon reviewing the distressing footage, was alarmed to find only one cub present upon her arrival at the scene, raising concerns about the fate of the other two cubs.
She emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the inherent risks associated with separating bear cubs from their mothers, particularly through such forceful means. Hobbs expressed her dismay at the recklessness displayed by the individuals involved and stressed the need for greater awareness and responsibility when interacting with wildlife. The lone cub was subsequently transported to a rehabilitation facility for assessment, with plans for its eventual release back into its natural habitat.
