A family dinner can be nice, but it can also turn awkward, like what happened to a woman at her in-laws’ place. She shared her story on Reddit, asking if she did the right thing by leaving the table.
Here’s what went down: “My husband and I went to dinner at my in-laws’ house. Everything was fine until my mother-in-law brought up my husband’s ‘player’ phase in high school. She joked, ‘Honestly, him in high school, I never thought he’d actually settle down with somebody.’ Then, my father-in-law chimed in, ‘Yeah, even less with someone like you.’ I asked him what he meant, and he said, ‘Well, you weren’t exactly his type in high school.’ My husband tried to stop him, but my father-in-law kept going, saying I didn’t catch my husband’s eye back then.
I couldn’t take it, so I went to the bathroom. My husband came and told me we were leaving.”
When we got home, my husband got a text from his mom saying my reaction was immature and rude. She said we wouldn’t be invited back until I said sorry. My husband said I’d only apologize if my father-in-law said sorry first. He didn’t hear back, but his sister told me to say sorry right away because I was putting my husband’s relationship with his parents at risk over a misunderstanding.
