An ingrown toenail can be very painful. Here are some tips on how to handle it and what you can do to fix the problem:

 Immediate Measures

1. Foot Soak: Soak the affected foot in warm water with some salt or antiseptic (e.g., Betadine). This helps clean the area and can reduce inflammation. Do this 2-3 times a day for 15-20 minutes.

2. Nail Care: Gently trim the ingrown part of the nail with a soft nail clipper or file. Cut the nails straight across and avoid rounding the corners.

3. Cotton Balls or Swabs: Carefully place a small piece of cotton ball or swab between the nail and the skin to keep the nail away from the skin and prevent further ingrowth.

4. Antiseptic Ointment: Apply an antiseptic ointment to the affected area to prevent infection.

Long-Term Measures

1. Proper Nail Care: Cut your nails straight across and avoid rounding the corners. Make sure not to cut the nails too short.

2. Comfortable Shoes: Wear well-fitting, comfortable shoes that provide enough space for your toes. Tight shoes can worsen ingrown toenails.

3. Special Products: There are special splints and pads available that can help straighten the nail and prevent ingrowth.
