Meals for My Stepdaughter — Now Her Mother Hates Me

Family relationships can be tricky, especially with stepparents and children. A woman shared her tough experience on Reddit about her stepdaughter’s diet and her role in it. Here’s the story.

What happened?
My 15-year-old stepdaughter has been living with us every week for the past year and has been difficult about food. At first, she went vegan, and I made meals without animal products. But then she switched to a holistic diet and said she was allergic to many foods.

Now, she avoids lactose and gluten. She wants separate cookware and even throws out pantry items she thinks cause her stomach pain. I suggested she eat out or cook and clean for herself, which made her angry. My husband yelled at me because of this.

I suggested she see a professional about her eating issues, and we found out she had no allergies. Even so, she stuck to her diet beliefs. Frustrated, I started adding gluten and lactose to her meals without telling her. She ate them with no problems. When her mother visited and praised her health due to her new diet, I told her she had been eating the same food as us.

This caused a big argument, and my stepdaughter and her mother left our home. My husband was mad because his daughter didn’t want to live with us anymore. I told him he could move out if he wanted her to live with him. They sued me, but I stand by my actions. I won’t cater to a teenager’s unfounded diet beliefs, especially with my demanding job as a nurse.

I believe I did what was best for our family and can’t waste time or energy on unrealistic diet demands. Am I wrong?

How have people online reacted?

  • Your husband started yelling at you about it? Congratulations husband, you are now your daughter’s chief chef and bottle washer.

  • If your husband wants to back up his daughter so much, he’ll learn how to support her dietary needs. His pawning it off on you and then yelling at you while he does nothing all shows just how “supportive” he actually is. If her mom is drinking the Kool-Aid, she can send your stepdaughter batched meals that can be heated up by Little Miss Princess.

  • She wanted a separate, different menu. Your husband is stretching how long incompetence can be sexy with his inability to cook. Being a good father doesn’t make him a good husband. He doesn’t seem to respect you as a partner or as a professional unless his credentials exceed your own in the healthcare industry, he should pull his head out of the sand and listen.
