I stood there frozen, tears streaming down my face, unable to comprehend what was happening. My mother-in-law’s words stung like daggers. Liar? What could she possibly mean?

“What are you talking about?” I managed to choke out. “I’m not lying. I’m pregnant! Clay and I wanted this more than anything!”

She stepped closer, her face twisted with fury. “Don’t you dare act innocent! You’ve trapped my son in your lies long enough. He told me everything—you’ve been pretending to get pregnant for years just to keep him chained to you. And now, this? Pathetic.”

Her words hit me like a freight train. “Pretending?” I stammered. “Why would I… No, you don’t understand. I really am pregnant! I have the test to prove it.”

She scoffed, crossing her arms. “Save your breath. Clay isn’t a fool. He’s already taken action to get rid of you. You’ve overstayed your welcome in this house, so pack your things and leave.”

I was shaking, not just from the shock but from the sheer injustice of it all. Clay and I had been in this together—or so I thought. I had endured the heartbreak of negative pregnancy tests, the invasive fertility treatments, the sleepless nights filled with tears. And now, when we’d finally gotten the miracle we dreamed of, he was divorcing me? Accusing me of lying?

I stormed upstairs to grab my phone, desperate to call him and demand answers. But when I unlocked it, I saw a new message from an unknown number.

“Meet me at the park. We need to talk.”

My stomach dropped. Was it Clay? I didn’t recognize the number, but something told me to go. I grabbed my coat and left, ignoring my mother-in-law’s taunts as I slammed the door behind me.

At the park, I spotted Clay sitting on a bench, his head in his hands. He looked up when he saw me, his face pale and drawn. He didn’t look angry—he looked… conflicted.

“Clay,” I started, my voice trembling. “What’s going on? Why would you—why would you leave me a note like that? And why does your mother think I’ve been lying about being pregnant?”

He looked away, guilt etched into every line of his face. “I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I didn’t know how to handle this. I found something… something I couldn’t ignore.”

“What are you talking about?” I demanded. “What could possibly make you do this?”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope. “This was in your purse. I wasn’t trying to snoop, but… it fell out, and I couldn’t ignore it.” He handed it to me, and as I opened it, my heart sank.

It was a receipt—from a fertility clinic. A donor fertility clinic.

“I thought we were in this together,” Clay said, his voice breaking. “But this… this means you went behind my back. You didn’t even tell me.”

I stared at the receipt, realization dawning. “Clay, this isn’t what you think,” I said, tears welling up again. “Yes, I went to the clinic, but only because I wanted to explore all options. I was going to tell you—I just… I wanted to surprise you with the good news first. I didn’t use a donor. This baby is ours.”

He looked at me, searching my face for honesty. “How can I believe you?”

I reached into my bag and pulled out the ultrasound photo I had been carrying since my appointment. I handed it to him with shaking hands. “This is proof,” I said. “Clay, this baby is a part of both of us. I would never lie to you about something so important.”

He stared at the photo for a long time, his expression softening. Finally, he let out a shaky breath and buried his face in his hands. “I’ve made a huge mistake,” he whispered. “I let my mother get into my head. She’s been telling me for years that you’d do something like this. I don’t know why I listened.”

I stepped closer, my heart aching. “Clay, we can fix this. But you have to trust me. And you have to stop letting your mother control our lives.”

He looked up at me, tears in his eyes. “I’m so sorry,” he said. “I let my fear and her words ruin everything. Can you ever forgive me?”

I didn’t answer right away. I had been through so much pain in the last 24 hours. But as I looked at the ultrasound photo, I knew one thing: I wanted this baby to grow up in a home filled with love and trust—not bitterness.

“I’ll forgive you,” I said, “but only if you promise to stand by me and this baby. No more letting your mother interfere. This is our family now.”

He nodded, pulling me into his arms. “I promise,” he said. “From now on, it’s just us.”

It wasn’t going to be easy, but for the first time in what felt like forever, I felt hope. This was the beginning of a new chapter—one I was determined to write on my terms.
