Stepparents Who Truly “Stepped Up

Blending families can be difficult, especially for kids who suddenly have a new stepmom or stepdad. It’s a big change to accept someone new in their lives. But when the new parent is patient and kind, something beautiful can grow.

The Story:

My dad left us when I was 4. My mom remarried, and I felt stupid jealousy. I always did things to annoy my stepfather and complained about him to my mom a lot. She couldn’t take it anymore and suggested they get a divorce. I was eavesdropping and felt so happy! But then I heard my stepfather say he couldn’t live without us, and that we’d struggle financially if they split up.

After high school, I went to university with help from my stepfather’s friends. Everyone at home was happy, and we celebrated at a café. During my third year, I got pregnant, but my boyfriend refused to marry me. I was ashamed to tell my parents, especially my mom. Even though I had grown to think differently about my stepfather, I was still rude to him out of habit.

At that tough moment, I realized he was the only person I could talk to. And I was right. It was the first time we had an honest talk. I felt guilty and asked him to forgive me. My biological father had never reached out to me. I had my baby and finished my studies, and my parents helped me with everything.

This year, my son is starting school, and we’re all getting ready for it, especially his grandpa. They’re very close. I think my stepfather’s love for my son is like making up for all the things I did. And from me, I just want to say, “I’m sorry, Dad!
