We often think we know everything about our close family members. But sometimes, an accident can reveal ugly truths that can ruin even the happiest relationships. Anna has always valued her relationships with her mom and mother-in-law.

Anna, 33, recently wrote to us about a painful decision she made to cut ties with her mother and mother-in-law. She’s now asking if others would do the same in her situation.

Anna’s letter started, “Hi! I’m writing because I need help with a complicated situation in my life. I don’t have many people I can trust now, so I want to share my story with others who might have faced something similar. I hope to get some good advice from the comments when my story is published.”

Anna continued, “I’m no longer in contact with my mom and mother-in-law because they teamed up against me and started acting very badly. I’ve always loved my mom and we had a close and trusting relationship. I’m an only child, and my mom raised me alone after my dad died when I was 3. She was an amazing parent, always protecting me and punishing anyone who mistreated me.

My mother-in-law also felt like a second mom to me. She’s kind-hearted and has always been very supportive and loving, which made me feel like a lucky person.

Both my mom and mother-in-law helped a lot with my kids while my husband and I worked full-time. But I noticed some things that didn’t sit right with me. They were too involved in our family life, asking a lot of questions and offering help where it wasn’t needed.

I caught my mom looking through my husband’s phone a few times. When I confronted her, she said she thought it was her phone because she didn’t have her glasses. My mother-in-law was also caught reading messages on my phone and my husband’s computer. I thought it might be curiosity, so I tried to understand.

When I spoke to my mom about it, she went pale and didn’t want to discuss it. I told her I’d cut off contact and not let her see her grandchild if she didn’t tell me the truth. She then revealed that my husband had been cheating on me for six months and that both she and my mother-in-law knew about it before I got pregnant. They kept this a secret, knowing I was unsure about having another baby and that it was a tough decision for me.

I was so shocked, frustrated, and depressed that I decided to cut off contact with everyone, including my husband, my mom, and my mother-in-law. I’m planning to raise the baby alone and don’t want them at the birth. Am I right to do this, or should I forgive my mom and give her another chance to be a good mother and grandmother?”
