Few people choose to remarry their ex-spouses. When they do, they believe it’s the right choice. For Amy, remarrying her ex felt natural because she was still in love with him. But soon, things happened that made Amy doubt giving him a second chance.
The couple divorced some time ago, but it wasn’t the end.
Amy, 34, wrote us a letter sharing her story. She wanted to warn others about renewing relationships with someone who once let them down.
Amy began, “My husband Dan, 36, and I were sweethearts since middle school. We dated for over 8 years before getting married. Our marriage was rocky, with lots of fights and even suspected cheating from Dan, though he denied it. I found some messages from a colleague on his phone and decided it was time to end things. My trust in him was already damaged after his immature behavior during tough times, so I initiated the divorce, and he eventually agreed.”
After the divorce, the couple met once and couldn’t hold back their feelings.
Amy continued, “We divorced 3 years ago, and I avoided Dan for a long time. He tried to reach out for coffee, but I ignored him. About a year ago, we met by chance in a supermarket. I saw him with a beautiful woman, and I was instantly jealous. Even though we were divorced, seeing him with someone else hurt.”
Amy explained, “Dan called me that same day. He explained that the woman was his dad’s secretary, and he was helping her because she injured her leg. She had asked to go to the supermarket. I believed him since she was limping, so I agreed to meet for a talk.”
They started dating again, and Dan surprised Amy.
“The first time I saw Dan after that, I realized I still loved him. He was very attentive and delicate, and we started our relationship anew. I was totally happy until one day when he disappointed me again,” Amy wrote.
“One day, Dan woke me up at 6 am, saying he wanted to take me to the spa. It wasn’t a special day, but I was excited. At the spa, Dan mentioned going to a fancy restaurant afterward and that he had a surprise for me. I was all in.”
“We had a romantic dinner, reminisced, and talked about our future. Then, Dan got on his knees and took out a box from his pocket. My heart stopped—I didn’t expect this. He made a sweet speech and asked me to marry him again. I said yes!”
But the surprise turned into a disaster.
“Seconds later, my excitement turned to horror. Dan opened the box, and instead of a ring, there was a note saying ‘you’ve been pranked!’ He laughed hysterically and said, ‘Honey, this was just a prank! I’m not ready to remarry you yet!’ I slapped him and, with tears streaming, told him, ‘We’re over, you nightmare of my life.'”
Amy shared that Dan kept texting and calling for a month, but she felt sad, betrayed, and very angry. She concluded, “I thought it was going to be one of the best days of my life. But I learned you can’t step into the same river twice. It was a hard lesson, but I’m ready to move forward without him and now I know I divorced Dan for a reason.”
