“I Overheard My Husband Talking Privately With His Co-worker — It Left Me Feeling Completely Embarrassed”

A woman shared her story on Reddit about finding out her husband was saying hurtful things about her. She felt shocked and devastated and reached out for advice on what to do next.

She wrote:

“For 15 years, I’ve been married to my husband, and our relationship has been amazing. Sure, we’ve had some small issues, but nothing like this.

I used to make lunch for him to take to work every day. But about a month ago, he told me about a new food stand near his office that he loved. He said their food was so good that he started buying lunch there instead of taking what I made. Since then, he hasn’t asked me to pack his lunch. Maybe I made him lunch about five times since then, but I’m not even sure if he ate it.”

She went on,

“The other day, my husband accidentally called me. I thought it was just a regular lunch break call, but it turned out he had butt-dialed me. At first, I didn’t hear much, just his voice talking to someone. I almost hung up, but then I heard another voice. I got curious, so I muted my work call and listened in.

At first, it was a normal conversation with a woman. He was really praising her cooking. That made me a bit upset, but I thought there must be a good reason.

But then things got worse. I lost it when I heard her ask, ‘So tell me, was it better than your wife’s?’ And he said, ‘Oh yeah, no doubt! She tries her best, but yours wasn’t tasteless like hers,’ and they laughed.

I was shocked! After 15 years of cooking for him, now he has a complaint? And he’s telling some coworker about it? It’s not innocent on her part either, right? Why did she even bring me up? Anyway, I got really mad. I ended the call and sent him a message saying he doesn’t have to worry about my cooking anymore, and he can eat from the bin from now on.”

She continued,

“He apologized, saying he loves my food and was just trying to impress his coworker. I asked why he lied about where he got lunch, and he said he first got it from the stand but then the coworker offered, and he didn’t want me to be jealous.

So, I’ve been giving him the cold shoulder since. I’m still upset, to be honest. I haven’t made him lunch or dinner since he said he disliked it. Today, he said he’s sorry and I shouldn’t keep punishing him, but I’m close to leaving for my parents’. I even packed a suitcase under our bed.

My dad thinks it was a dumb comment but says I should work it out. My mom supports me no matter what. I’m thinking of leaving for a few days, but I just want some advice on whether that’s the best thing to do.”
