We wish for a world where women can walk alone without fear, but the reality today is different. About 65% of women in the US have faced street harassment, and 20% say they’ve been followed. Some courageous women are sharing how they stay safe to help others.
One woman learned from someone else’s experience when she noticed she was being followed. We’re sharing her story to help other women be ready if they face a similar situation.
Internet advice that proved very useful
A Reddit user avoided a possible stalker because of advice she read in comments on the same topic. She was at a mall with her husband and went to the restroom before leaving. Her husband stayed in the car.
Inside the restroom, she saw a man who looked at her as she walked by. She remembered a post about a woman being followed: A comment said never to go into a public bathroom if followed. She left the bathroom and went back to the shopping area, but the man stayed close.
Then, she remembered another comment: “If you think you’re being followed, calmly go into a store that the person wouldn’t normally go to.” She saw a dollhouse store and went in. The man followed her and kept watching her.
She got scared. She quickly went outside, and the man followed her closely. She called her husband and said loudly, “I’m being followed by the man behind me.” Her husband came quickly, and the man who was following her left right away. The danger was over.
