“My Mother-in-Law Made Hurtful Comments About Me to My Daughter, So I Chose to End Our Relationship”

Exploring the intricacies of family dynamics can sometimes feel like a wild ride, with emotions running high. Yet, amidst these fluctuations, there are boundaries that are deemed untouchable. Today, we dive into a story where familial tensions escalated dramatically, transcending personal conflicts and involving legal authorities.

I had a car accident and had to be rescued from the car. Thankfully, I wasn’t badly hurt, but the other person was. I stayed in the hospital overnight for a checkup. I called my husband and told him what happened. He dropped our daughters (6 and 12 years old) at my MIL’s place while he came to see me. The next morning, he brought them to the hospital. When my 6-year-old saw me, she started crying, saying she didn’t want me to die. She said Granny wished I would die so they could live with her. My husband and I were shocked, and my 12-year-old confirmed hearing it too. My husband decided to call MIL.

When he returned, he seemed really angry. But he didn’t say anything until we got home. He told me that my MIL denied it at first, but then she admitted it when he pressed her. She claimed she didn’t mean it. I thought we were close, but I guess not.

I’m deeply hurt by her words. I told my husband that I don’t want me and the girls to have any contact with her. I said he could still have a relationship with her if he wanted, but I don’t want us involved. My husband agreed to support my decision. Then he called MIL and relayed what I said.

She didn’t handle it well. She came to our house crying and said it was all a misunderstanding. She claimed she didn’t mean it and that we were misunderstanding her. My husband asked her what she really meant.

She got very upset and started crying, saying she always wanted daughters but couldn’t have any more kids after my husband. She said the girls feel like her own daughters rather than granddaughters. She admitted she wasn’t thinking clearly when she said that to our 6-year-old. My husband had to take her home because she was so upset.

When he came back, he told me he didn’t know she felt that way and asked if I still wanted to cut her off. I said yes, and he agreed without arguing. But it’s been a week now, and he’s still quiet about it. Now I’m starting to feel guilty and wonder if I misunderstood her.
